A phone or tablet dash is one of the best quality-of-life upgrades in sim racing — if you place it correctly.
Mount it too low and you’ll look away from the road. Too high and it blocks your monitor. Too far away and you can’t read it. Too close and it becomes another distraction.
The 3 best dash locations (and who they’re for)
1) Just above the wheel
This is the “race car” position. It’s usually the best choice when:
- You want fast, tiny glances (gear, RPM, fuel).
- You drive cars with busy cockpits or lots of info.
- Your monitors sit behind the wheelbase and there’s room.
Watch out for: blocking your view of the monitor’s bottom edge, or creating a screen you subconsciously stare at.
2) Between wheel and monitors
This is the “clean setup” position. It’s great when you run triples close to the wheel and want the dash tucked in neatly.
Watch out for: vibration if the mount is flimsy — especially with direct drive torque.
3) Off to the side
This works surprisingly well for endurance and strategy:
- Fuel, tyre temps, brake temps
- Track map / relative gaps
- Pit window reminders
Watch out for: head movement. If you have to turn your head, it’s too far to be “primary” info.

- Rule 1: You should read the dash with your eyes, not your neck.
- Rule 2: If vibration makes it blurry, your mount or cockpit needs attention.
Dash content: what to keep on-screen
Most sim racers end up with the same core info:
- Gear + RPM front and center
- Fuel remaining somewhere you can find instantly
- Delta during practice (optional in races)
If you’re streaming, it can be tempting to show “everything.” The best dashboards are boring: clear, consistent, and fast.
When a dedicated touchscreen is worth it
Tablets work. Phones work. But if you want a dash that feels integrated, a purpose-built screen can be cleaner — especially when you’re also adding button boxes or tactile gear.
