iRacing gives you a lot of control in-car: fuel strategy, tyre changes, relative gaps, in-car adjustments. That power lives inside the black boxes… and it can feel like trying to do admin work at 250 km/h.

This guide is about using black boxes calmly, not learning every feature in one night.

The only black boxes you need at first

  • Relative: who’s near you and how fast they’re closing
  • Pit: fuel/tyres/repairs (especially for endurance)
  • Standings: big-picture context in longer races

The “two-button” approach that reduces stress

Instead of mapping 20 actions, start with:

  • Next/previous black box
  • One action button (for selections)

Then build from there. Muscle memory beats complexity.

Practice without pressure

  • Load an offline session.
  • Drive at 80% pace.
  • Cycle boxes on straights only.
  • Repeat until it feels boring.

Make black boxes easier with a “control zone”

Black boxes are easier when you have the right controls close to your hands:

  • Button box mounts help keep navigation controls reachable and stable.
  • A keyboard tray is useful when you need text input, menu work or quick adjustments between stints.

Goal: less panic, fewer mistakes, more attention on traffic and braking points.
